Girlfriends

One of the best things about being a girl is the chance to have girl friends. My family is amazing, don't get me wrong, but there is nothing that compares with my best friends. I learn so much about myself and feel so at home when I am with them. I am uncensored, goofy, vulnerable, open, honest and humble. I am stripped down of my layers and so present when we are together.

Our group of girlfriends have been together a long time. We have been friends through school, college, graduations, divorces, deaths, marriages, babies, life. That longevity means so much to us all. It brings us from all corners of the world to reunite for important occasions.

This weekend, we celebrated Kaylee's wedding. We made ourselves a cozy den at La Grange B and B in Wakefield, Quebec, and prepared her for her life as a wife. We gave her away to a great guy. We aren't losing a friend, we are watching her grow by a new dimension as a woman. We were all so honoured to stand beside her as she took her vows and promised her life to him.

We have always loved giving each other crazy makeovers during weekend sleepovers. It was a fun thing to do when we were nine, and it still is at 27. Instead of rainbow sparkles and exaggerated eyebrows, we now make each other up for nights out on the town, birthday dinners and, naturally, weddings. I love this picture of Andrea and Kaylee for that reason: it was such a full circle moment to watch Andy do Kaylee's wedding day makeup.

We drank champagne, sang 90s girl power songs, cried, hugged, laughed, dances, ate and bonded all over again over wedding preparations. I am so glad that I could go along and spend this time. Our lives all keep us quite busy these days: jobs, families, distance keep us from having monthly sleepovers. We are growing are own trees and branches. So when we're together again, we make it good. We talk about the good stuff, we laugh at and with each other. Magic happens. We all feel so much more ourselves when we part ways after being together.

Congratulations on your wedding, Kaylee. We love you and are so excited you've found your happy place!

  1. What a great post. Girlfriends are, indeed, a treasured commodity.
