Six Months

This morning, the babies awoke ravenous. I moved too slowly for their liking in my dreamy morning state, taking too long to put fat little fists through arm holes in dresses, and new diapers on plump tooshies. I hastily outfitted them and finally put bottles to rosebud lips, wishes granted. We sat in the quiet morning then, greedy sucking and swallowing coming from below big, deep blue eyes that fixated on me.
I feel so much their mother when they do this, when they burrow deep into my soul through my eyes.
We carried on with morning, feeding them their pablum and dancing in the kitchen. Abby was still asleep, and the papa bear hibernated under down, cave-like blankets. The girls are six months old today, I mused. The sunlight was just peeking in through our front bay windows, so I laid out a quilt, and brought out my camera. Six months old. That is definitely a milestone I want to capture. I always, always want to remember just how they looked at six months old. Before they could walk, or talk. Before they could argue back, or complain. Before they can run and play. Six month old baby girls.
“A mother's body remembers her babies-the folds of soft flesh, the softly furred scalp against her nose. Each child has its own entreaties to body and soul.” - Barbara Kingsolver
They've now acquiesced to the call of their soft cotton crib sheets, off to the land of nod for a morning nap. Their little bodies splay out in the most beautiful tableau I think I have ever seen. Soft breaths whisper out of little noses. Little chests rise and fall under their dresses. Their breathing speeds and slows. I wonder of what they dream
My little girls are six months old and so full of life and promise. The world is indeed their oyster, but we are the lucky ones.
Twins, I'd say
Just for fun: here's the post I wrote on Abby's six-month milestone.

  1. Right at the bottom of the post it gives pictures/links to some of your other posts. Right there was Abby on her 6 month picture in the exact same position as the twins in the pictures on the bottom. They sure do look like Abby when she was that age!

  2. You are such a gifted writer. Reading your blog makes me feel happy and peaceful. I hope that one day you write a novel - I'd be first in line to buy it:)
